Relation between mental health and speech therapy
Mental health has a very close relation with our flow of speech. Sometimes under-confidence, depression, anxiety, stress and other psychological states manifest themselves through speech disturbance. In such cases a psychologist or a speech therapist alone are unable to tackle the problems completely. Hence in such cases we start the initial sessions with a speech therapist who can help solving the problem at a more functional level, after this the psychologist intervenes to understand the underlying problem that is causing this speech disturbance. Once a diagnosis has been made by the speech therapist that the cause of the speech problem is not biological, the case is dealt at a psychological level.
Our tone, our pitch, our fluency while speaking are usually indicators of our mental state. In psychological therapy sometimes when these speech issues manifest themselves as precursors to a deeper mental condition then addressing them through speech therapy along with psychological therapy works wonders.
