LifeMental illness: Warning signs and early intervention - Rachita Narang - Best Mental Health Specialist in Delhi

Schizophrenia or bipolar disorder is one of the major mental problems that could have significant impact on the life of an affected person. But there is little to worry about these problems as they never come out of the blue. Most of the times, family members, close friends, co-workers and even the affected persons know that something isn’t right with them.

Signs of mental illness first become visible in thinking, feelings and behavior before the problem appears in its full-blown form. But learning about these early signs or symptoms and taking quick action can help control the problem. It is called early intervention and it is quite helpful in keeping a mental illness less significant.

With early intervention, you can even delay or prevent a problem from cropping altogether.

Signs and symptoms
  • Changes in appetite and sleeping: If the changes in your food intake and sleeping pattern are dramatic then it is a matter of concern for you.
  • Changes in mood: If you feel that your emotions change faster than predicted and your mind always remains in the grip of sad feelings then you have a mental problem.
  • Withdrawal: If you feel lack of interest in the activities you enjoyed previously and show no interest in increasing social interaction then it is a matter of worry.
  • Reduced output: If you feel like quitting sporting activities; difficulty in performing tasks; missing deadlines and failing in school or college then you are suffering from a mental problem.
  • Problems thinking: If you face difficulty in concentrating, recalling and in logical thinking then it is a wake-up call for a developing mental illness.
  • Becoming over sensitive: If you feel unusual sensitivity to sights, odor and touch or you try avoiding over-stimulating situations then you are facing a mental illness.
  • Feeling alone: If you feel lonely and disconnected from your surroundings then you are mentally ill.
  • Illogical thinking: If your thinking doesn’t match with the reality like unusual beliefs about personal power then it is a sign of mental illness.

One could experience just one or two symptoms. In this situation, the person needs to look for more signs as a couple of symptoms can’t predict mental illness. But if the signs are changing your behavior and obstructing your performance in study and career then it is a serious matter that needs quick attention. People with suicidal thoughts or those who think of causing harm to others must immediately look for medical help.
